Understanding Cleft Lip

Cleft lip is the incomplete formation of the upper lip. It is one of the most common birth defects affecting children in America. Also known as Cheiloschisis, a cleft lip occurs in the early development of the fetus and can appear on one or both sides of the face.

Cleft lips occur because of many reasons. Sometimes, cleft lips run in families, while in many cases, they rely on genetic predisposition. It can also be because of environmental risk factors or a rare condition called Pierre Robin Syndrome. The development of a cleft lip has many possible causes, which scientists continue to research today.

Infants with underdeveloped mouths can undergo cleft lip revision as early as two months of age. However, we recommend surgery during the child’s third or fourth month to achieve optimal surgery results. The exact timing of the repair depends on the baby’s health and considerations of his or her future development.
